One of the finest and most famous sundials in the world is at Glamis Castle, the historic seat of the Earl of Strathmore, the father of HRH the Duchess of York. This master piece, which stands over 21ft in height was set up in the time of Patrick. Earl of Strathmore and Kingborne (1647-95). Who was a great builder at Glamis. On the four sides of the pillar are lions, each of which holds a shield, with a dial-face. Lyon being the ancient family name of the Earls of Strathmore. The elaborately faceted block carries a large number of dials. In all over eighty dial-faces may be counted.
Glamis Castle is situated beside the village of Glamis in Angus, Scotland. It is the home of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
Glamis Castle has been the home of the Lyon family since the 14th century, though the present building dates largely from the 17th century. Glamis was the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, wife of King George VI. Their second daughter, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, was born there.
The castle is protected as a category A listed building, and the grounds are included on the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, the national listing of significant gardens.
